Exchange of the day: Graham and Sotomayor
I think the most interesting exchange of the day took place between Sen. Lindsey Graham and Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. It involved Sotomayor’s infamous “wise Latina” comment.
Graham pointed out that if he or another white person made a similar statement, it would make headlines and evoke ire, as it should. Then he went on:
”I’m not going to judge you by that one statement. I just hope you’ll appreciate the world in which we live in, that you can say those things meaning to inspire somebody and still have a chance to get on the Supreme Court. Others could not remotely make that statement and still survive.”
Sotomayor responded: “I hope we have come in America to a place where we can consider a statement that has been misunderstood and consider it in the context of one’s life.”
