FTC probe leads to $163M ‘scareware’ judgment

WASHINGTON – The operator of a so-called “scareware” scheme that used sophisticated technology to trick consumers into believing their computers were infected with viruses in order to sell them anti-virus software has been hit with a $163 million judgment by a Maryland federal court at the request of the Federal Trade Commission.
