An Erie County, Pa. jury awarded a classical pianist and his wife $3.5 million to compensate them for the debilitating brain damage the man suffered after doctors at Hamot Medical Center failed to diagnose and treat a brain infection he suffered in December 2007.

A transplant patient who contracted bacterial meningitis from an infected kidney — which went untreated for weeks and resulted in brain damage — will receive a $6 million settlement from Rush University Medical Center.
