Settlement reached in another tainted Bayer rice case

In the first action following a series of similar bellwether trials involving Germany based Bayer Cropscience AG, four Mississippi rice farmers reached an agreement with Bayer to settle their genetically modified rice claims for $873,000, according to Don Downing, co-lead counsel and lead trial attorney for the plaintiffs.

A federal jury in St. Louis, Mo. has awarded $500,248 to a farmer who claimed that he and his family lost just over $1.5 million when genetically modified rice contaminated the U.S. rice supply.

A federal jury in Missouri says the German conglomerate Bayer CropScience should pay $1.5 million to farmers in Arkansas and Mississippi whose rice seed was contaminated with a genetically altered strain. Friday’s verdict was the second against Bayer CropScience for losses sustained by farmers when an experimental variety of rice that Bayer was testing infiltrated the farmers’ crops.
