Every lawyer knows that states take the lead responsibility in governing our profession. To be sure, there are some federal constitutional issues involved. For instance, the Supremacy Clause allows lawyers to practice certain types of purely federal law even in states where they are not authorized to practice. But lawyers receive their licenses from state governments and usually must obtain a state’s license to permanently practice law in that state.
