This wasn’t a typical medical malpractice trial. For one thing, the plaintiff was a first-round draft pick to the National Football League who had a record-setting season as a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins before he injured his toe and was forced to retire. And while the witnesses included experts from both sides on the standard of care, NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino also took the stand. The end result was an $11.5 million verdict for Otis J. McDuffie against the Dolphins’ team doctor, Dr. John Uribe.
