A Las Vegas surgeon recently convicted of a federal felony has agreed to pay $800,000 to settle a slander suit filed against him by another doctor.
Mark Kabins pleaded guilty in November to essentially failing to report an alleged crime committed by others.
It was part of a 2007 fraud case alleging that a network of Las Vegas doctors and lawyers cheated clients out of services by protecting doctors from malpractice lawsuits and sharing legal settlement kickbacks.
Dr. Daniel Burkhead, an anesthesiologist, sued Kabins and others tied to the fraud case, accusing them of making false statements about his ability to practice medicine.
David Chesnoff, who represents Kabins, says there was no admission as part of the settlement in the civil case.
