California rules on same-sex marriage (access required)

A state ballot initiative limiting marriage to a union between a man and a woman was a permissible change to the state constitution, the California Supreme Court has ruled. However, the court also ruled that the estimated 18,000 same-sex marriages performed prior to the passage of Proposition 8 are valid.
